| Axeman yarning with a Frenchwoman |
|
National Library of Scotland A uniformed man resting an axe over his left shoulder passes the time of day with an elderly Frenchwoman. They are standing in a lumber yard, in front of carefully stacked piles of timber. The woman is most likely from a nearby village. With countless towns and villages along the length of the Western Front, those working behind the front line frequently came into contact with local civilians.
It is thought that John Warwick Brooke took this photograph. A British official photographer appointed by the Government and Military, Warwick Brooke is best remembered for his candid shots of daily life at the Front.
